Lawrence Media Minds

Interviews;
Sony Camcorder & Canon SLR-LIKE

Collecting material on media in Africa and media in America and the connection between the two.

Interviewing people has been difficult because most people have not thought of the questions that we have chosen to ask them. We allow them to review the questions beforehand however these questions are more complicated than we meant them to be. The reaction is something to explore as well, because our project is about what people do not think about. And we are shedding light onto this invisible connection.

We have so far interviewed;
Nidal Kram - African - American, Sudan
Mariah Mateo - American, Uganda and Sierra Leone
Natalie Fordwor - Ghanaian
David Frempong - Ghanaian
Sarah Ehlinger - American, Sierra Leone
Natalie Gratton - American, Sierra Leone
Harjinder Bedi - American, Ghana Togo and Benin
William Meadows - American, Sierra Leone
Chelsey Sand - American, Sierra Leone

So far it has been difficult with some and easy with others depending on how much they have thought about or been subjected to the issue. Engaging people is key, explaining and simplifying the questions, and trying to set them up in an environment where they are comfortable.

  1. I'm sure that these interviews will yield very interesting and varied responses. I think that it's great that the subjects come from a variety of different countries and regions within Africa, but that there are also several subjects from Ghana and Sierra Leone. I'm interested to see how different subjects from the same country respond to the same media phenomena.

    Are you asking the same scripted questions of all of the subjects or are you letting the interviews run their own course? Did you two know all of the subjects well before the interviews or were they mostly strangers?

  2. Have you thought about interviewing anyone who is associated with or who has been a part of the Senegal study abroad? Professor Sarnecki might be a good person to think of, also because of her knowledge of film.

    It sounds like what you are trying to do is very difficult, but it seems like you're going about it in the right way and that you understand that it won't be too easy. Giving your interviewees the questions that you are going to ask is a good way to prepare them.

  3. We plan to interview Professors Skran and Vetinde. I did not think of Sarnecki but I have talked to her about this issue and I will ask if she has time.

    Some interviewees I know well and Zena does not and some she knows well and I do not so it is a good mixture.

  5. Consider including your own process of discovery as part of your video piece. What you're doing may have no prior models.
